10 must-things to do in Berlin at night

With a high multicultural, young and lively crowd, Berlin indeed gets exciting in evening and night. It is famous for its cultural nights and party hotspots. The city looks stunning by night. Here you will find a list of top things to check out after sunset. These provide a fun alternative to the regular nightclubs.

1. Enjoy the season of Open Air Cinemas

What a beautiful way to welcome summer by rushing to open air theaters. Let us introduce you to some of the best known open-air cinemas- Freiluftkino (at 4 locations-Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain, Hasenheide, and Mitte) and  Sommerkino Kulturforum at Potsdamer Platz.

They mostly show Hollywood blockbusters to some real classic movies. The atmosphere becomes very cozy while watching the film. You can check with the staffs if they offer blankets (in case it gets cold). You can also bring your own food and drinks. The tickets cost 6 euro onwards.

2. Club Der Visionaere for some social gatherings and music

It’s a riverside bar (also a beach bar) that has a wooden sun terrace. Usually famous during summers for its afternoon parties, the club is equally happening for a great evening with its electro and minimal music till early morning. Besides the dance part, the club is counted as a perfect spot for social gatherings. Prices are moderate.

3. Enjoy a panoramic view of the city at night

Berlin has a few landmarks where you can climb by day or night and have a stunning 360-degree view of the whole city.

  • Berliner DomeThis remains open until 8 pm daily. The stair climbing activity up to a passage will be a bit exhausting for you but the gorgeous views of the surrounding areas make it a worthwhile experience.
  • TV tower -Berliner Fernsehturm is accessible until late night. With its super fast elevator, you can reach within seconds to its rotating bar & restaurant area at 203 level. While being seated near a window seat, you can have an amazing night view of the entire city.
  • Reichstag– Another place for an excellent view of the Brandenburg Tor and the surrounding regions. Make sure you have booked the tickets in advance to skip the long queues. The dome is active everyday until midnight.

4. Cocktail bars, restaurants, nightclubs etc

After dark travelers can enjoy happy hours by visiting Savignyplatz,  where you are bound to find a lot of restaurants and bars.

In general, Berlin’s nightclubs are located in areas like  Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, and Friedrichshain. It doesn’t matter in whichever bar or club you end up in, you are going to have a rocking experience.

Few of the nightclubs that certainly require your visit include- Berghain, Watergate, and Tresor. Always remember that here the party begins late, say only after 1 pm. Don’t expect much crowd before this time. Keep in mind that the Bouncers are a bit strict and always on the watch.

So ensure not to make any scenes and dress nicely. I have seen many a times people getting dragged out or being denied entries. Don’t think I am scaring you, but ensure you are at your best.

5. TIPI am Kanzleramt

It is one of the best places in Berlin for live concerts and stand-up comedy throughout the year. Its design resembles a circus style tent with dining and a terrace bar. It has received great reviews for its Cabaret performances.

The negative aspect would be its expensive prices but the service & experience parts are fabulous. We are sure that here you will end up having a great entertaining night.

6. Enjoy live music

There is something for all types of music lovers.  The city is a home to the world famous Berlin Philharmonic and other opera houses. The city also features popular jazz clubs like – A-Trane, SO36 etc. International artists from time to time perform shows at large concert halls at Mercedes-Benz Arena and Waldbühne.

7. Have a night stroll through the Brandenburg Gate and Unter den Linden

The majestic boulevards along the Brandenburg Tor and Unter den Linden make for a perfect stroll up to the museum island. With the night stroll, you are able to see the dazzling city lights.

There are loads of coffee shops and restaurants to rev up your energy on the way. Don’t forget to visit a popular souvenir shop Ampelman  (the iconic figure of the traffic lights).

8. Observe night sky at the Wilhelm-Förster-Observatory and Planetarium

This will be an offbeat night activity for you as a tourist. On a clear sky night, you should invest your time in stargazing and related tours at this planetarium. This runs multiple times a week and the admission tickets are cheap.

During bad weather, the planetarium creates its artificial night sky. It also features exclusive children’s programs and star shows, thereby making it an absolute point of interest among kids.

9. Mesmerizing Festival of Lights

Only in October, you can see this 10-day running light show. All the famous landmarks, especially in the heart of the city, become a canvas for light and laser shows. This festival so far has been one of the most successful light events in the world.

The timings for this are mostly from 7 pm until midnight.

10. Get spooked with Berlin Ghostwalk in the night

This is particularly for those visitors who enjoy a good scare. These spooky tours are perfect for some haunted history learning. Check out the English-speaking tour provide by “haunted Berlin Barentouren”. It runs for almost 2 hours featuring a Night Watchman as the leader.

He narrates some horrific tales of the town and city’s history. Your stops include- a visit to Berlin’s oldest tavern, a cemetery inside the medieval city walls and the ruins of the monastery church.
