Once a river island in the Sava river, Ada Ciganlija artificially has been turned into a peninsula. Transforming the island into a peninsula resulted with forming a lake that is approximately 4 km long. Due to its popularity Ada Ciganlija is often called the Belgrade sea.
In the past, the island Ada Ciganlija was used as a prison, but in the 60s, it was transformed into the extremely popular multifunctional recreational zone of Belgrade. It is famous for its beaches and sport facilities and during the summer season many people visit Ada Ciganlija.
The lake is perfect for swimming, boating, kayaking, diving, surfing and other sports, therefore here has been held several world and national championships.
Ada Ciganlija has dozens of restaurants in a rustic-style, floating restaurants and cafes where you can experience the Bohemian tradition of Belgrade.
