Take a trip under the sea in a real submarine

The Shallow Draught, Bridgetown, BB 11142, Barbados

Barbados is full of exciting things to do and one of the most unique attractions on the island is the Atlantis Submarine tour.

Fortunately for visitors, the tours can be easily booked through most hotels and resorts and transfers to and from the port in Bridgetown are included in the price. The tour costs around $120.00US per person but it is worth it, especially for people who are unable to snorkel or scuba dive and would like to see what it’s like below the surface of the ocean.

The tour starts with a shuttle pick-up at your hotel and continues on to pick up other people who also booked the same tour. So basically, you are getting a tour within a tour because you will get to see some places along the way to Bridgetown.

Upon arrival at the docks, you are be ushered into the visitor’s centre where you register and have a chance to browse the souvenir shop for some one-of-a-kind submarine-themed gifts. Next, you board a small ferry that takes you just outside the harbor to the waiting submarine.

During this fairly short boat ride, the crew provides passengers with some safety instructions and a chance to relax and take in some of the views of the city. When the engines stop and the top of the submarine appears just ahead, that’s when it’s time to get ready to board!

Boarding is easy although there are some steep stairs to descend. The crew is there to assist and once inside, you can take a seat in front of one of the little round windows. Once everyone is seated and the hatch is secured, the submarine begins its 150-foot descent to the bottom as the outgoing and knowledgeable crew narrates everything as it happens. Over the course of about an hour, you can expect to see turtles, thousands of colorful fish, barracudas, plant life and even a couple of shipwrecks. It’s like a whole other world under the sea!

As the submarine begins is ascent back to the surface, the crew provides one last treat for all onboard; their rendition of “My Heart Will go on” from the movie Titanic. Maybe a little cheesy but entertaining nonetheless!
