Marktplatz in German, The Council Square has been holding annual market gatherings since 1364, merchants from all over the country and from abroad being present at these events. As the city of Brasov, the square has a rich history from medieval times, told through the different aspects that have remained until nowadays. For example, in the center of the market there is a pillory that was used for public humiliation and witches were punished here.
Built in 1420, the Council House was the place where decisions about business matters were taken at the time. In the 17th century, the building had inside an execution room. Currently, the building hosts the History Museum of Brasov, where rare exhibits and collections are exposed to the public.
Some smaller landmarks are around the square: Hirscher House or Merchant’s House (Renaissance style), the entrance to St. Nicholas Church, a museum in the memory of Muresianu family of which descendants published a political newspaper in the 19th century, and nevertheless, nearby is one of the most important landmarks of Transylvania: The Black Church.
Every year, The Council Square hosts an international music festival: The Golden Stag Festival.
Many famous artists were present and performed on the stage of this event: Kylie Minogue, Diana Ross, Christina Aguilera, Cyndi Lauper, Kenny Rogers, Ray Charles, UB 40, INXS, Scorpions, Tom Jones, Ricky Martin, P!nk, Sheryl Crow & many others.
The Council Square is a place to relax, admire the surroundings and maybe have a coffee or a cold drink during summertime, when many cafes are aligned along the square, in open space.
The Council Square is located in the Old Medieval part of Brasov, a city 2h and 40 minutes far from Bucharest, the capital city of Romania. You can travel by car or train.
