Special Nature Reserve Stari Begej – Carska Bara (meaning Imperial Pond) is a nature reserve located in the vicinity of the city Zrenjanin. Carska bara has some unique ecosystem composed of several different elements. The length of the Swamp is 1 500 m, the width 700 m, and the depth is from 0.90 m – in spring and beginning of summer, to 0.40 m – during summer.
It is made up of several lakes, willow grows, steppes, reed and bulrush. Protected natural area has the shape of the letter “S”, and it is a still body of the Begej river. In the area of the Reserve once existed countless large and small wetlands, while today this area is mainly characterized by meanders of the old Begej river and ponds are around them.
This area is not only water surface. Numerous forest area with its tall trees, some of which have withered tops, ideal as observation spots.
Its ornithofauna is of great importance for the Reserve. Among 250 bird species, out of which 140 species of nesting birds are globally endangered species, such as White-headed Duck (Oxyura leucocephala), Lesser White-front-ed Goose (Anser erythropus), Pygmy Cormorant (Phalac-rocorax pygmaeus), Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus), White-tailed Eagle (Heliaeetus albicilla), Corn Crake (Crex crex).
In addition to birds and amazing flora which consists of over 500 species, there is also a significant number of wild boar, deer, fox, rabbit .. In the waters of the old Begej river and Carska bara there are 24 species of fish.
Because of the presence of 240 bird species, UNESCO listed Carska bara as a Ramsar site, or wetland of international importance. Some of the rare birds that can be seen here are: the white-tailed eagle, meadow harrier, hawk, Spoonbill …..
Within the Reserve there are many trails, as well as one that surround the Carska bara, boat rides with professional guide are also available and there is organized birdwatching.
