Beautiful castle in Bern

Avenue de Chillon 21, 1820 Veytaux, Switzerland

The Château de Chillon is one of the most beautiful castles and architectural feats of history that simply must be visited to be appreciated. It is not the stereotypical Disney like Castle, but rather was built and added on throughout history until it has become an amalgamation of time periods. Located right on the shores of Lake Geneva, Chillons sits on a rock island and was built to withstand and to defend against attacks. Historical excavations show that the castle location has been occupied since the Bronze Age however it is the additions, renovations and restorations that were built on in latter centuries that are more prominent today. If possible, arrive from the lake front from the boats instead of driving in by bus because you don’t want to miss Chemin Fleuri (Flower Path). It is 4km of promenade that is beautifully framed by flowerbeds that bloom in these vibrant colors and winds around taking you on a relaxed approach to the castle. The Castle Chillon was built in bits and pieces over the centuries however the greater portion of it is accorded to have been built by the House of Savoy. It is also famous for having been featured by the poet Byron in his poem, The Prisoner of Chillon.
