The turreted castle of Gruyere

Rue du Château 8, 1663 Gruyères, Switzerland

Château de Gruyères is a beautiful turreted castle in the town Gruyères, which was originally owned as an earldom by the Counts of Gruyères. Located only 35 km from Fribourg and about 40 km from Vevey, the castle is easily accessible by car, bus or train. After 19 generations of counts from the 11th to the 16th century, the last Count Michel ended up in bankruptcy which led to the earldom being split between the cantons of Freibourg and Bern who owed money. Today the castle is owned by the canton of Freibourg and has a foundation instituted for its maintenance. The castle is a visual feast of architecture, maze like gardens and artistic features. From the period furniture to the historical tapestries and the modern ‘fantasy art’ exhibitions that are hosted at the castle, there is much to be explored while visiting. Visitors can also have guided tours, workshops for kids and meet with the artists being exhibited.
