Have you ever wanted to climb around waterfalls and enjoy the pools they create? There are few places where this is not possible due to safety concerns, but you can indulge yourself with just that when you go to Dunn’s River Falls in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. For a small fee of course. That fee is reasonable though and worth every penny.
The falls are absolutely beautiful! Incredibly clear water flows over the falls and eventually out into the ocean. Dunn’s River Falls is approximately 180 feet tall but spread out over a length of about 600 feet. There are a couple of deeper pools in between the waterfalls where you can swim and relax before continuing on your way.
It is possible to climb the falls on your own, but most will climb as part of a group with a guide and forming a human chain to help ensure everyone is safe and has an enjoyable experience. The surrounding area is lush and well-shaded for an all around tropical and almost spa like experience.
Water shoes are highly recommended. Some people were wearing their regular sneakers but who wants to ruin expensive shoes! Plus they get so heavy when wet. You absolutely will get wet just in case you thought climbing a waterfall might be a dry experience. Ladies, wear board shorts or running shorts over your bathing suit. It will allow for a more comfortable experience.
Most likely you will be visiting Dunn's River Falls while staying at one of the all inclusive resorts on the island of Jamaica or as a port of call on a cruise ship. In both cases, you will be able to sign up for an excursion and shouldn't need to worry about transportation and directions.
If you do have your own car, or would simply like a point of reference from your area of the island:
