Located on the coast of the state of Michoacán is Maruata, a beautiful, unspoiled beach that is hard to find on travel guides. In fact, the first person to write about it heard about it from a foreign backpacker who travelled the world looking for unknown places (does this remind anyone of the famous blockbuster “The Beach”?!). The beach consists of three gorgeous bays.
As you get closer to Maruata, tropical vegetation will start to appear, virgin beaches will stand in front of you and limestone rocks will surge from the ocean. Due to its lack of tourism infrastructure, camping is one of the few lodging options.
For birdwatchers, Maruata is heaven on earth. Different species of birds such as flamingos, pelicans and other roam about in search for food.
Maruata Viejo is located near Maruata (45 minutes walking) and is worth going there. It is a protected bay where you can snorkel or dive. It is also ideal for horseback riding and hiking.
