Memento Park is an open-air museum in the Hungarian capital, Budapest, that features statues from the Communist period in Hungary. Statues dedicated to Lenin, Karl Marx, Fredrick Engels and more are displayed in the museum. Divided into two sections, Statue Park and Witness Square, the parks is home to a replica of the Stalin’s boots (a Monument given to Stalin from the Hungarian people on his 70th birthday that was later torn down by anti-Soviets) and over forty two statues.
The architect of the park declared that the park was about democracy even if its theme was dictatorship. “This park is about dictatorship. And at the same time, because it can be talked about, described, built, this park is about democracy. After all, only democracy is able to give the opportunity to let us think freely about dictatorship.”
In Memento Park, many cultural and art projects, festivals and events are held such as retro festivals, film festivals and more.
