Smiljan is a village located seven kilometers northwest of Gospic (Lika-Senj County), fifteen kilometres from the Zagreb – Split Highway. According to the 2001 census, the village had a population of 446 persons. In Smiljan was born Nikola Tesla, scientist and innovator. He was working in the field of electrical engineering and radio, and has invented a rotating magnetic field and the polyphase system of alternating current.
In Smiljan is Memorial centre “Nikola Tesla” in a house where he was born. In front of it is the statue of Tesla by Mile Blazevic, 2006.
The oldest traces of human settlements in Smiljan aredating back to the Middle and Late Bronze Age. There are 22 graves with numerous remains of ancient Iapodian culture.
