Built in the year 1734 under the rule of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, The Nahargarh Fort is an impressive architectural structure standing strong in the lap of the Aravalli Hills. There is an eerie story attached to the fort’s history. It is believed that the fort was originally named Sudarshangarh but it was haunted by the spirit of Nahar Singh a Prince who had died mysteriously. It is said that the prince’s spirit destroyed any construction work at the fort and agreed to flee only if the fort would be named after him. Hence, the name Nahargarh came into being.

Well, a story so captivating must have already attracted you to the attraction. The fort has to be travelled on foot from the end of the Nahargarh road to the height at which it is housed. The winding path up to the fort is a once in a lifetime experience. The fort is also connected to the Jaigarh Fort via an extended wall.

The most striking feature of the fort is the Madhavendra Bhavan built under the rule of Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh. It is a two storey building and was particularly designed for the luxuries of the King and his queens. It has exemplary interiors with murals and stucco designs. There are in all 12 suites in this bhavan and each suite was specially allotted to each of the nine wives of the King. This bhavan is a true example of the Rajputana taste and the beauty of the interiors speak for itself.

Special rooms for the ladies were designed and were called ‘Zenana’. The rooms have a delicate touch and are decorated beautifully. You will also find a ‘Mardana Mahal’ which was meant for the royal men. The entrance gate to the fort is known as Tadigate and to the left of this entrance is a temple dedicated to Gods whom the Jaipur rulers worshipped. Another notable temple inside the fort is dedicated to the Prince Nahar Singh Bhomai.

An unparallel view of the city is seen from the fort and one cannot get a better view of the pink city from anywhere else in Jaipur.  Be all set to be mesmerized by the scintillating natural charisma of the place as you behold the sunset from the Nahargarh Fort.
