The National Museum of Valjevo was founded in 1951 it is the central building in the center of the town of Valjevo, located on the banks of the Kolubara River, not far from Tesnjar the old city center, the new bazaar Knez Milos Street and the Grand Hotel.
The museum has more than 50,000 different items classified into four types of collections: archaeological, historical, ethnographic and artistic. The museum is responsible for the protection of movable and intangible cultural heritage on the territory of the city of Valjevo and the other five municipalities.
Today, the museum is one of the most modern and the most visited museum institution in Serbia, with over 100,000 visitors every year. On two occasions (2005 and 2008), it was deemed the best museum in Serbia by the Museum Society of Serbia as well as winning many other national awards.
