Old World Charm and 16,000 roses to see

Rapperswil-Jona, Zurich
Available all around town

The town of Rapperswil-Jona, Zurich literally means Town of Roses and it is no surprise that they are serious about blooms here. Roses shape the town landscape and make for a picturesque yet inviting experience for anyone visiting. Located on the upper half of Lake Zurich, Rapperswil is a town full of southern charm, small and quaint alleys from the old part of town and of course, lots of roses. The town of roses owes its name to the more than 16,000 roses that bloom on the “Schanz” as well as in the Capuchin monastery rose gardens. The Schanz is a rose garden for the blind which is specifically made up of 1522 plants from 75 fragrant varieties of roses whose names can be read in braille on guide panels. The old part of town dates back to medieval times so there is that part of the attraction for those of a historical bent. However it is the Rapperswil castle that sits, perched high on a hill overlooking the town, which completes the picturesque setting. The castle is used as a Polish museum so it presents another avenue for exploration while visiting the city. In lieu of visiting the museum, visitors can also take in the stunning views of Lake Zurich from the top of the hill. City tours and lake events are available for visitors but self-exploration also works
