Schwetzingen Castle is famous for its magnificent Baroque palace gardens. The history of Schwetzingen Castle dates back to the 14th century, when it was a moated castle. From a small medieval moated castle Elector Carl Theodor made his summer residence in the 18th century. The nearly 72-acre resort with its fountains, pavilions and sculptures located right in the heart of the city and invites many visitors to stroll and linger.
Every year since 1952, the Schwetzingen Festival is held here which attract many famous personalities from around the world. The Schwetzingen Palace Garden is the one and only preserved garden in Europe which is still in its original shape. Numerous exhibitions take place in the castle grounds such as the Orangerie exhibition or the documentation of the development of the garden which are not only informative but also extremely interesting.
