Šmartinsko Lake

Šmartinsko Lake is located near Celje, the 3rd biggest city in Slovenia. It is an artificial lake (reservoir) that was created in 1970 by damming the Koprivnica Stream. The dam was built because of flooding threat of the Savinja River for Celje. Lake surface area is a little above 1 square kilometer.

Šmartinsko Lake lies a few kilometers north of Celje and is accessible by car, bike or feet. In last years, it became a nice recreation, sport and tourist area and is a very popular tourist destination for local people and also other visitors. There is an idyllic, unspoiled nature with rich offers for sport and other activities. You can rent a boat, kayak and pedal boats and go freely around the lake, discovering secret places. If you just like to relax but anyway being on the lake, you can go on a boat named Lake Queen (Jezerska kraljica) that travels around the lake. Lake is also popular for fishing. It is possible to rent a place for a picnic (BBQ) too.

You can drive by car to the parking area near the lake. But a lot of hikers, runners and riders prefer to use safe, well-marked path that starts at the Church of St. Spirit in Nova vas near Celje. There is also a walking path around the lake with many wooden benches to rest and information boards about the lake and life in it. Around the Šmartinsko Lake and in the neighbourhood are restaurants offering food and drink.

Adrenaline lovers should try zorbing where you roll downhill in a huge PVC orb. Is is possible to sit up to two persons next to each other, attached to a seat. The zorbing track is located near the lake and is almost 150m long.
