Trakoscan Castle is located in the region of Hrvatsko zagorje, north of capital of Zagreb, 23 km northeast of Krapina, 40 km southwest of Varazdin; on elevation of 250 m. With around 40,000 visitors a year is one of the most visited Croatian castles.
The castle was built in the 13th century as a borough in the system of fortifications of Zagorje Principality. It was property of the the numerous feudal lords like Counts of Celje, Jan Vitovec, Korvini, and Draskovici.
The renovation, in the spirit of romanticism was made in neo-Gothic style with simultaneous restoration of the environment, including the park-forest with rare trees, lake and garden area. The castle has a permanent museum, which contains valuable examples of Baroque furniture and small original items.
