Pionirska Dolina (Pioneer Valley) is the in Sarajevo’s zoo and its area spreads over 8.5 hectares.
It was founded in the 70’s. The zoo homed a myriad of animals, but during the Bosnian War, it was razed to the ground. And it wasn’t until the beginning of the current century that it began its restoration with the help of other regional zoos such as Belgrade’s Banja Luka and Sofia Zoo recently donated several animals to it, including two lions. As of June 2013, the zoo holds thirty nine different species from around the world.
The zoo has horticultural facilities, rich flora and fauna and attractions for children to play (a train, slides, a rubber town, a carousel and more). Visitors can enjoy a friendly atmosphere while walking through nature, recreation while watching a variety of animals such as zebras, Scottish cattles, deers, brown bears, lamas, kangaroos, porcupines, peacock, raccoons, various types of poultry, monkeys and exotic reptiles such as a boa and a caiman.
