My spouse is my second love, the first one being traveling! During my vacation this year, I planned to travel to the magnificent Andaman and Nicobar Islands. After a lot of research and google-ing, I found that monsoon, starting late May is the best season to visit the place. I planned the trip accordingly along with a few close friends of mine and, trust me; it was the best decision of my life.
Quick Tip: Make the flight bookings whenever they are the cheapest and look for the best deals available online for the rest of the travel plans.
When going, I usually prefer local transport, but for Andamans, I had no idea about the transportation scenario. Moreover, Uber and Ola do not operate there which was another big snag for us. During our stay, we relied upon taxi, auto and bus services that were extremely convenient.
The First Step
For any travel plan, the first thing is booking the flight tickets which can be done in many ways. You can book the tickets through a travel agent or search for deals online or even book it from any airline’s official website. Before we booked our flight tickets to Port Blair, we searched through all the sources and compared prices to book the cheapest one.
Once the flight tickets are done, you can proceed further with the other things.
Decide Your Budget!
The next thing I do for all my travel plans is determining the budget. Trust me, a trip without a budget will NOT work. From the place you check in to the activities you go for, everything depends on your budget.
I had a budget of INR 35,000- INR 40,000 for visiting this exotic destination and I was gladly able to manage my trip within the same.
While researching, I found out that the two chief places to visit in Andaman and Nicobar Islands are Port Blair and Havelock Islands. Depending on the time and budget you have, extend your trip to other places.
Where to Visit?
I also spoke to fellow travel enthusiasts and found out that other places I could visit include the Neil Island, Baratang Island, Rangat and the famous twin islands Ross and Smith. Some people also visit Long Island and little Andaman which are again offbeat destinations.
However, one thing that I would advise everyone is that you must not rush your trip at any time. You miss out on the fun in the hustle bustle, and the trip just turns into a rushed holiday. It is imperative to spend sufficient time in every city you travel.
Port Blair has direct flights only from selected cities like Chennai, Kolkata, and similar. If you plan to travel from other cities or countries, you will have to board a connecting flight via any of these towns. During the sale season, the prices can go as low as INR 7,000- INR 8,000, which in my opinion, is a steal deal.
For me, the return tickets to and from Chennai cost around INR 8,000 which is a reasonable price.
The hotel rates are competitive in Port Blair so you can consider a minimum of INR 2,000 per person per night for a decent hotel.
For my stay in Port Blair, I searched through some websites and finally booked the hotel Ross View through Go2andaman.com which was the closest to the Netaji Stadium, for two nights.
For my stay in Havelock, I chose the El Dorado Beach Resort which was again an amazing experience. The overall stay here was vintage, and we loved it in this town.
Quick Tip: There is a ferry that transports you from Havelock to Port Blair which might get canceled due to inclement weather. If you plan to travel from Havelock to Port Blair, take care of your flight timings and come back a day prior.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are known for exciting water activities throughout the year. Some of the activities I was interested in included-
- jetSki ride that is available on many beaches and can be booked on the spot
- scuba diving that is priced around INR 3,500 – INR 5,000 along where you also get pictures and videos for a 40-minute dive. Besides, there are also PADI and scuba courses that start from INR 18,000 and go up to INR 80,000 to train you as a master diver.
- a fascinating water activity that I had planned to do – snorkeling. It cost us INR 800 per person and was actually worth the price.
There are a lot of other fun activities as well like the banana boat ride, parasailing, undersea walking, and similar that people go for.
There are a few modes of transport in the Andamans which include taxis, autos, buses and hiring a scooter. As per my observation, taxis are super expensive. If you want to travel locally, auto, buses, etc. are the best option.
Also, all over the city, there are a number of hoardings that offer bikes for rent. You can definitely consider this as an option.
Bring Back Some Good Memories
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are one of the most beautiful destinations to visit. This experience has, till date, been the most exhilarating event of my life. Everything about the place is breathtakingly beautiful – from the coral reefs to the cosmopolitan population, you cannot crib about anything going wrong.
Our trip lasted for three days and felt a little short. If you have more time available, extend your journey to adore this place completely.
Our entire stay was filled with exploring new things and being bewitched by the ecstatic beauty of this location. Whatever be your travel list, Andaman must surely be on it.
