Idrija, the town of mercury mines and laces

 

Located in the Goriška region, the lovely town of Idrija is well-known for its mercury mines and its beautiful laces. Idrija is surrounded by the Idrija Hills and the river Idrijica flows through the town.

 

The mercury mines in Idrija is one of the two mines listed as UNESCO World heritage sites. The Idrija Miner’s House and the tourist mine of Anthony’s Shaft and Šelštev are two interesting attractions about the history of mining in Idrija.

 

Idrija is famous for its art of laces making. The Former School Building and Idrija Center is a must-go for anyone who likes beautiful things. One of the top Slovenian souvenirs to bring back includes the Idrija laces, especially elegant tablecloths, and unique pieces of jewelry.

 

The beautiful town of Idrija is inside the Geopark Idrijaa UNESCO World Heritage site. The various thematic trails and the natural attractions such as the Wild Lake are part of the beauty of Idrija
