Jugovzhodna Slovenija, the wine-growing hills

The region of Jugovzhodna Slovenija is situated at the southeast side of Slovenia. Wine roads, historical castles and many fun outdoor activities can be done in Jugovzhodna Slovenija.

Vineyards, beautiful hills and green forests are the main charming landscapes of Jugovzhodna Slovenija.

The area of Dolenjska and Bela Krajina are famous for the production of wines. Many wine roads are available in the area for a wine tasting journey or a wonderful drive through the beautiful hilly vineyards.

One of the oldest towns in Slovenia is the historical town of Ribnica, famous for its wooden crafts and pottery. The Ribnica Castle dates back to the 12th century and is now an important museum of the area.

The Kostel Castle is the second biggest castle in the country and was built in the 14th century. The castle was owned by the famous Counts of Celje in the 15th century. Nearby is the Nežica waterfall, known for its drastic variation of water volume.

Slovenia is known for its rich and dense forest. One of the greenest and untouched forests in Slovenia is the natural reserve of Kočevski Rog with its numerous trails.

A typical medieval castle in Jugovzhodna Slovenija is the beautiful Žužemberk Castle that overlooks the river Krka from its hill. The castle dates back to the 13th century and is an architectural heritage.

Many water activities can be done around the refreshing stream of the river Krka, one of the most important watercourses in Jugovzhodna Slovenija.

The town of Novo Mesto, built on seven hills and settled around the river Krka, dates back to the 14th century. Castles, hills and water-mills are typical sights in Novo Mesto. The Krka Valley, just above the town, is believed to be one of the prettiest valley rivers in Slovenia.

The region of Jugovzhodna Slovenija has many relaxing spas such as the Dolenjske Toplice and Šmarješke Toplice.

The Otočec Castle is the only castle built on an island in Slovenia. The sight of the castle is unique and delightful: a Renaissance architecture surrounded by the river Krka. The Otočec Castle is part of the Terme Krka.

Famous wines of the region include the ruby cviček from Dolenjska, the dry red wine metliška črnina  and the red wine modra frankinja from Bela Krajina. The traditional belokranjska pogača (Bela Krajina flatbread) is a must-try when visiting the Jugovzhodna Slovenija region.
