If you want to see some wonderfully structured castles and fortresses you have to visit Serbia. This country is actually really rich in castles and fortresses so we decided to put together a list of them for you. All you have to do is scroll through it and decide which place you want to visit!
 

1. Bač Fortress

You can find this fortress in Bač, Serbia. Once a magnificent castle, today it is only a ruin but it’s still pretty appealing to the eyes and the best part is that it’s open to the public. It was built in the 14th century right next to the river of Mostonga. It survived some tough times and in 1711 it was burned down and naturally, every last one of its residents abandoned it. Since then it’s standing there, on the top of the hill all alone, awaiting its visitors to show them its beauty.
 

2. Niš Fortress

This big beauty is located in the City of Niš and it is one of the most famous and most visited landmarks of Serbia. Clearly, it’s open to the public and if you visit it, you will be amazed by it because it is truly wonderful! It was built in the 18th century. During World War I the Bulgarian forces occupied it and turned it into a prison and they also created some torture chambers there. Today it is best known for hosting the Niš Film Festival. 3. Golubac Fortress

This fortress was built in the 14th century next to the Danube River. It’s truly a magnificent sight and thanks to the fact, and also because Lepenski Vir is really close to this location, Golubac Fortress became a really famous and beloved tourist destination. 4. Smederevo Fortress

5. Fantast Castle

This castle is also known as the Dunđerski Palace because the person who built it was Bogdan Dunđerski. It is said that Dunđerski heard some rumors that he was broke and he wanted to prove everyone wrong. Out of his pride, he got this amazing castle built and it still stands tall and beautiful as ever. Today it plays the role of a hotel and also a restaurant, so feel free to book a room there and enjoy the true ‘rich man’ experience. While you’re there, don’t forget to check out their amazing garden and also the mausoleum.
 

6. Petrovaradin Fortress

This beautiful piece of gem is also known as the ‘Gibraltar of the Danube’. This fortress has many underground tunnels, it’s really amazing. Also, in one of our previous articles about interesting landmarks in Serbia we mentioned the Clock Tower of Petrovaradin which is located right here, on the walls of this fortress. The place is really well-kept and preserved and once you’re up there, you can’t help but fall in love with the view. You can see the Danube River and everything beyond it and it’s truly magnificent! Another interesting piece of information is that the famous EXIT Festival is held here in this fortress! So you can party all night and then during the day, as a break from all the jumping around, you can visit the Fortress!
 

7. Maglič Castle

This castle is located near Kraljevo in Serbia and it’s been there ever since the 13th century. Its name derives from the word ‘magla’ which translates to fog which probably has to do something with the fact that the castle is sitting on the top of a hill, so beneath it there was always some amount of fog. It’s a well-preserved ruin, which sounds a bit silly, but considering the fact that it really is a ruin, it’s really well-kept. This place is also listed as a Cultural Heritage of Exceptional Importance! This place is truly magical, you get an amazing view of the whole area from up there so don’t forget to take your camera with you, you’ll definitely have the urge to snap a couple amazing photos while being there!
 

8. Kalemegdan Fortress

This fortress consists of three parts, the Upper and the Lower Towns (a.k.a. the Old Citadel) and the Kalemegdan Park. This place is truly exceptional because it’s really well preserved and nice-looking. You can take a long walk across the park and also the Old Citadel and a great time is guaranteed! This Fortress is located in Belgrade, the capital of the country so you’ll also have a ton of other things to see as well! The Kalemegdan Fortress is a heavily visited tourist destination, mostly because it’s one of the most famous landmarks in the country. 9. Kapetanovo Castle

The Kapetanovo Castle in Stari Lec is a truly beautiful place, but it has an extremely tragic backstory. It is said that the person who built this castle, Botka Bela lost his castle thanks to gambling and due to this loss, his wife, Ema climbed the highest tower of the castle and set herself on fire. The legend says that nothing was left of her, not even ashes but a single strand of blond hair still appears from time to time around the castle, and then it disappears. Some superstitious people believe that it’s Ema, playing some tricks on the visitors of her home. All in all, this place looks beautiful, the area around it is really peaceful and today it functions as a hotel, so you can definitely visit it and even stay there for a couple of days!
 

10. Kaštel

This amazing castle, which was built in the British aristocratic style is located near Zrenjanin, Serbia. It housed many high-end parties for some really famous people. Even Franz Liszt played there once, so that says something about the fanciness of this place and its parties. Today this castle serves as a hotel, but it also has an amazing restaurant where you can try amazing local dishes! They have various kinds of events you can attend and which are really interesting! This place is amazing and perfect for some relaxation. If you visit this place, you will have a great time!
