Assumption Church is an Orthodox church in the very center of the city of Novi Sad, located near the Serbian National Theatre. It is dedicated to the glory of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The original Assumption Church was a modest building constructed by an unknown architect in the western part of the city. After several decades, in the year 1765, it was reconstructed into a larger and more beautiful building.
When the church was completed in 1774, it was deemed the most beautiful church in the city. Particularly outstanding was the Baroque-style tower, which attracted the attention of every passer-by.
The iconostasis and the carving works were done in Baroque style and the painting of the iconostasis was done by Janko Halkozovic from Macedonia with the assistance of the Novi Sad painter, Vasa Ostojic. In the yard, near the wall of the church there are several tombs where the most significant persons of the society of the time were buried.
