Borisova Gradina is a big and beautiful park located in the central parts of Sofia. This park is the oldest and the biggest one in the city and it was built at the end of the 19th century. At first, the park was located in the suburbs of Sofia, but through the decades the city significantly grew and now Borisova Gradina Park stands right in its center.
The name of the park means ‘Boris’ garden’ and it was named after the Bulgarian ruler Boris III.
These parts of the park which are closer to the center of Sofia have a lot of benches, restaurants, cafes and many people walking and enjoying themselves. In the more secluded parts, you will feel like you are in a real forest and that the big and noisy city is far away from you.
Nowadays, the park houses a few places and facilities which are centers of social life – the National stadium “Vasil Levski”; the Bulgarian Army Stadium; the beautiful Ariana Lake; the biggest open beach in Sofia – around the ‘Maria Luiza’ pool; an Astronomic observatory; an open stage, where cultural events take place, and much more.
The park has a total area of 90, 5 ha and is an essential part of the life in Sofia. A lot of people spend their free time here, especially in the warm days. The Borisova Gradina park offers very good conditions for sports, walks, concerts, hanging out with friends and many others. Coming here is an excellent way to have fun with friends on a special occasion, if you do not have the money or just do not want to be in a restaurant or a club.
During weekends, you will find a lot of people in the park who are taking their dogs out for a walk, spending time with their children outdoors; drinking beer; eating ice cream; riding bicycles, hanging with friends and many others. If you are a tourist who does not want to only do some sightseeing, but desires to feel the spirit of the city, this is the place for it. You will see here how the citizens of Sofia are relaxing and if you are social enough, you will surely find new friends.
