Tikveš is an amazing place in Croatia, or to be more exact, in Baranja.
People usually forget about this part of Croatia, because the country doesn’t want to invest in it, so it’s slowly falling to pieces just like this castle.
Castle Tikveš has so much potential, but they just let it waste away. It’s situated in the middle of a beautiful forest full of wildlife, it has a rich history and it’s a perfect place for taking a long walk and enjoying the sunlight and the chirping of birds. If you’re lucky enough, you’ll see a wild boar or a deer peek their head through a bush. It’s truly magical, but if you want to visit this place only because of the castle, our recommendation is to just skip it. Except if you like castles which are slowly decaying.
This place has an extremely rich history. This castle was handed down from one rich and famous family to the other. Its walls saw so many things, it lived through the Teschens, the Habsburgs, the Karađorđević dynasty and Josip Broz Tito. It served as a hunting centre to all of these families. Sometimes it’s called the Oasis of Peace because of the peaceful forest around it.
If you’re a big fan of walks in the nature and enjoying the closeness of the wildlife, this is the right place for you. The castle is still amazing because it lived though a lot and it has an amazing history, but if you’re visiting it purely to see the architectural design values, please, don’t have any high hopes.
But the park is still really nice, we recommend having some picnics there!
