Czech Republic's fairytale-like town

Český Krumlov Czech Republic ‎

If you want to feel as though you’ve been transported to a fairytale – look no further and head to Český Krumlov in Czech Republic. Located three hours away from Prague, it makes for a perfect day trip although there are also hotels scattered around town for those wishing to stay longer in this dreamy UNESCO World Heritage site.

The architectural style of the town is mostly Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance and most of it dates back to the 14th century.

The whole city is walkable and you will spend the day sightseeing charming, colorful houses, museums, cafés, statues and walking back and forth over the Vtlava River. The main attraction, however, is the Český Krumlov Castle which is too large in proportion to the small city and hence, can be seen from anywhere and visceversa – being atop it will result in a lush view of the city. The legend behind the theatre tells the story of Evelyna, a girl who fell in love with David, a leading man and upon finding out that the love wasn’t mutual, Evelyna stabbed herself and died during the last act of the play.

Inside the castle is the Český Krumlov Baroque Theatre, one of the world’s best-preserved Baroque theaters. The theatre is only used three times a year due to its old age in an attempt to preserve it.

The Castle’s Garden is a must-see as well. Filled with statues, trees and labyrinths that will add up to the fairytale experience of the town and it’s a great place to get away from the crowds. It is believed that the garden is inhabited by naiads and dwarfs who guard a buried treasure. The garden is also available for rental, so if you are interested in hosting an event here and have 11,000 Koronas to spare – go ahead!

Český Krumlov is also the host of a myriad of festivals. The most famous one is the Five Petalled Rose Festival, celebrated in June during the weekend of summer solstice. During the festival, the town acts as a medieval town with its people, (especially the artists, musicians, performers and others) dressing up in costumes from the Middle Ages and taking part in activities such as fencing, dancing, theatre. The festival ends with a fireworks show right over the emblematic castle.

Another favorite among locals and visitors is the International Music Festival of Český Krumlov, held every summer starting in July and ending in August and featuring musicians and artists of both Czech origin as well as foreign.
