Experience 4,000 years Breisach settlement and urban history at the Museum of City History in Rheintor. The Rhine Gate was built in 1678 by the French military architect Jacques Tarade and plans by Vauban. In place of a previous medieval building a magnificent new gateway was built in French town of Breisach. With its elaborately decorated west facade it is one of the most beautiful still preserved fortress gates of Europe. Since 1991, the City History Museum After has been opened for visitors. After almost complete destruction of Breisach in 1945 has lost much of its eventful history, so that the museum only a few objects from the 19th and 20th has in its holdings that are now on display.
