An impressive cave with one of the biggest underwater lakes in the world

Ctra Cuevas s/n, 07680 Porto Cristo, Mallorca, Islas Baleares, Spain
During high season (summer) the tours at 10:00, 16:00 and 17:00 h are the least busy ones.
The entrance fee is 14.50 € for adults and 7.50 € for children between 3 and 12 years.

The village Portocristo is home to some huge caves on Mallorca. One of them is the cave Cuevas del Drach, the biggest one in Portocristo. Located at the southern part of the village, the caves are close to the eastern coastline. They are one of the main tourist attraction on Mallorca, with a length of 1.200 meter and a profundity of 25 meters at its deepest part.

The caves were already known back at the Middle Ages. However, they have not been explored until 1880 by the cartographer M.F. Will. In 1896 E.A. Martel went on with the exploration and discovered the cave with the big lake, which has been named after him. Between 1922 and 1935 the cave got prepared to give access to visitors: paths have been mounted, stairs have been constructed and the engineer Sr. Buigas designed the electric illumination for the cave, which also includes the lightshow representing a sunrise at the great subterranean lake. The cave corresponds to the Miocene era and the formations in its interior have been constructed by water filtration. Every 100 years the stalactites grow about 1 cm.

Within one hour, you will come across huge and impressive stalactites and stalagmites, columns and dendriform stalactites. It lies in your imagination which object, animal or human being they resemble. The 1.200 meter long underground path leads you to the biggest subterranean lake of the world. Most visitors only come to see the colourful lightshow at the lake. This is especially attractive due to the darkness at the cave and the background music. Since 1935, a small orchestra plays a 10 minute concert while the players drive around the lake on a boat. The cave tour ends with a small boat ride over the lake once the lightshow and the concert are over.

How to get there

There are two caves in Portocristo. Cuevas del Drach is the one when coming from the road from Portocolom (PM-4014). The caves are directly situated next to the ocean. The caves have a direct bus stop 'Coves Drac' and during summer many buses head this direction and during winter the bus service gets a little bit decreased.
