Djavolja Varos

Djavolja Varos (Devil’s Town) is the natural monument made of soil and rock, shaped in a form of pillars. There are 202 soil figures of different shape and size, from 2 m to 15 m of height, topped with stone blocks.
Those pillars are result of centuries long specific effects of erosion. Erosion effected on their size, appearing and disappering.
Within the Devil’s town there are two springs of strong acidic waters with high mineralization. Due to a high percentage of iron and other mineral water has red and orange color. Waters of this kind is rare in the world, and local people believe that it has healing power. Doctors and geologists do not recommend using these waters since as they have not been thoroughly examined so far.
This geomorphological phenomenon is unique in Serbia and very rare in the world. In Europe, there are similar phenomena in the Alps, as well as in the United States, known as “Garden of the Gods”. The devil’s town was a nominee in the New 7 Wonders of Nature campaign. The devil’s town is located on the slopes of Radan mountain, near town Kursumlija, approx. 90 km southwest of city Nis.
