El Chiflon

El Chiflon is a chain of five waterfalls located in the state of Chiapas in Mexico. The main and tallest waterfall, Velo de Novia (Bridal Veil) reaches an altitude of 120 meters (394 feet) and is followed by other smaller, but equally stunning waterfalls such as El Suspiro (The Sigh), Ala de Angel (Angel’s Wing), Arco Iris (Rainbow) and “Quinceañera”. 

In between the waterfalls, you will find natural pools of clear, turquoise waters to bathe in and get refreshed after the 1000 meter long walk up to Velo de Novia. Río Ran Vicente, a river that provides fresh water to the village around El Chiflón runs through the site, so be mindful of this and make sure not to do any activities that may pollute the water such as trashing or using soap and other contaminants!

It is no wonder that a vast amount of flora and fauna reside in this location. Some of the flora found in El Chiflon are orchids, mahogany, cedrus, sapodilla, sabinos and more. Among the fauna, the most prominent are iguanas, rabbits, armadillos, snakes and many species of birds.

The entrance ticket costs $30 pesos ($2 USD) and it includes an optional guided tour and the entrance to the site’s museum featuring photographs of the waterfalls. Ziplining is available for an extra $150 pesos ($10 USD).

For lodging, there are cabins located inside the site and around it as well as camping grounds (however, be aware that the wind is quite strong here and camping may sometimes not be advised).
