The El Yunque Rain Forest in Puerto Rico is about a 45 minute drive from San Juan. As the name implies, this is a rain forest and you should always be prepared for rain when you visit. The paths are paved so this isn’t an overly strenuous activity, nevertheless, be prepared to do a good deal of walking with changes in elevation.

El Yunque is the only tropical rain forest in the US National Forest system, and it is roughly 28,000 acres in size. You will find an abundance of ferns, orchids, and trees with 23 species being found no where else in the world. There is no need to worry about predators here, there are no large animal species, but hundreds of smaller animals that you may catch a glimpse of as you hike through the forest.
