Franciscan Church is one of the most visited churches in Ljubljana, probably also because of its location as it is located on the Preseren Square. It is standing next to the monastery church of the Franciscan monastery and the parish church of the parish Ljubljana.
History:
It was built between years 1646 and 1660. By the end of 18th century, the Augustinian order was abolished by the Josephine reforms and the monastery was populated by Franciscans. Then the existing Franciscan monastery was converted into a gymnasium and demolished in 1903. The parish of the Annunciation was founded in 1785 and since 1808 led by the Franciscans, who has also today the entire complex in possession.
Architecture
The church was designed as an early baroque basilica with two side chapels. The main facade is facing the river and is divided by two powerful pilasters. The Central part of the facade rises above the side ones and is concluded by a triangular pediment. The church facade was completely renovated in 1858 and decorated with a fresco by Goldenstein. This fresco was then in 1883 replaced with fresco from Wolf. The earthquake didn’t cause major damage, so renovation didn’t interfere with its basic form.
The main Baroque altar was made by Francesco Robba and the ceiling and side chapels were decorated in the 19th century by Matevž Langus. However, the ceiling was then in 20th century repainted by impressionist Matej Sternen.
Next to the church there is a Franciscan monastery with garden, compressed between Preseren Square, Čopova and Nazorjeva Street. In the monastery, there is also a famous library.
