Kopacki Rit Nature Park is a flooded area in region of Baranja, in the northeast Croatia, between the Danube and the Drava River. It was founded in 1976 and it’s the oldest nature park in Croatia.
This Nature Park has the total size of 17,000 hectares (177 km2), of which the Special Zoological Reserve covers 8,000 hectares (80 km2).
Kopacki rit is one of the largest alluvial plains and preserved intact wetlands in Europe. This area significantly changes during the year and its appearance is depending on the intensity of flooding, mainly from the Danube and much less from the Drava. It’s the biggest nursery and hatchery for freshwater fish in the Danube region and the most important ornithological reserve in Croatia. Here nest each year about 140 species of birds, and the great biodiversity of 2,000 biological species is a reflection of the rich flora and fauna of the park.
