The forest park Maksimir, is the first such park in Southeast Europe, opened in 1794 on the initiative of Zagreb Bishop Maximilian Vrhovac. Another bishop Juraj Haulik in 1839 preformed it in the English landscape style. Architectural objects are mostly the work of the builder Francis Schücht. The park of 316 hectares has a well-preserved flora and fauna of forests, and therein lays the five lakes (both natural, and artificial).
On the southern end of the forest park Maksimir is Zagreb Zoo.
The name of the park also has its city district with the surrounding residential areas, and the Dinamo football stadium.
