The Matthias Church is located right in front of the striking building and look-out terrace of Fisherman’s Bastion in Castle Mount. Matthias Church is a Roman Catholic church and one of the most popular attractions in Budapest.
Legend has it that the original church was built in the year 1015, making it over a thousand years old. However, there is no evidence that supports this statement. The new building dates back to the 14th century.
The interior of the church is just as interesting as is the outside, with amazing treasures to be found as well as important tombs of Bela III of Hungary, the king of Hungary and Croatia between 1172 and 1196 and Agnes of Antioch, the queen between 1172 and 1184 and the wife of Bella III.
Also inside the church is the Ecclesiastical Art Museum, which contains many relics and medieval stone carvings as well as many replicas of royal jewelry.
