Memorial Chorten, also known as Thimphu Chorten, is a very important landmark to the Bhutanese. It was built in memory of Bhutan’s third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuc, in 1974. It is located in Timphu and is considered the most visible religious structure in the city.
This chorten is different from the rest in Bhutan, because it does not hold the mortal remains of the king; instead, it showcases his photograph on the walls of the ground floor.
