Neretva Delta is a valley in the south of the Croatian coast of the Adriatic Sea by the mouth of Neretva River. There is an ongoing initiative to protect the whole valley as Nature Park Neretva Delta. Delta covers an area of 12,000 hectares. On the north and northeast is bordered by the branches of the Dinaric Alps. The most important cities are Ploce, Opuzen and Metkovic. In the area of Neretva Delta are five sites, of the total area of 1620 hectares, which are protected categories of ornithological reserve (Pod Gredom, Pond and Orepak), ornithological and ichthyological reserve (the Neretva Delta) and category of protected landscape (Lake of the Right and Blue Eye). In the Neretva Delta have been recorded 310 species of birds, of which 115 nesting birds, and in Metkovic is the second biggest ornithological collection in Europe.
