Nis Fortress is an urban fortress in the center of Nis, on the right bank of the Nisava River which has a continuity of about two millennia of continuous existence as evidenced by numerous archaeological finds. By its present state, is one of the best preserved fortifications of this type in Serbia and the Balkans. Nis Fortress is protected by law since May 1948, and by a decision of the Assembly of Serbia, in April 1979 declared a cultural asset of great importance. Today’s fortress is the artillery-type built by the Ottomans in the period from 1719 to 1723 in the area of the ancient and medieval fortress.
