A tragic story created something beautiful and culturally and historically relevant.

10290, Zaprešić, Croatia

Novi Dvori is a stunning castle with a tragic story.

The family who owned the estate was the Jelačić family. They built a chapel there, but shortly after that, their 9 month old baby girl died, so they added a tomb to it that you can still visit. Later on, when Ban Jelačić died, he was buried in that same exact tomb, next to his beloved daughter.

The estate had many other famous families as its owners before it became a Jelačić estate. Some of those families are the Zrinski, Festetić and Erdödy families. All of them were really powerful and rich.

The whole estate is really amazing. The castle underwent a couple of reconstructions over the years and we can’t really say that it’s intact, but considering that it’s an old building, it still looks really good. There are a couple of other really beautiful buildings you should check out here, like the aforementioned tomb, as well as the chapel.

If you feel like going for a walk, there’s a huge park around the castle which you can explore, and if you get tired you can always sit down on one of the many benches they put down for their visitors.

Novi Dvori is only 1.5 km from the centre of Zaprešić, and 20 km from Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. Which means that if you’re in any of these places, you should definitely make a small detour and check it out! If you like castles with a serious backstory, you will definitely like this one!

Oh, and the best part about it is that it’s completely free!
