In the center of Cakovec is fortress Old Town, the symbol of the city. The owners of the fortress were for many centuries the rulers of the city. The fortress was originally built in the Middle Ages for the family Ernust and then reconstructed several times for family Zrinski, who left the most significant mark for the history and heritage of Cakovec. In the age of the Zrinski family in the 16th century a central part of the fortress transformed into a Renaissance palace, which was built around a set of brick-built walls. The walls were never completed, and over time are partly upgraded and partly demolished.
