Novigrad is located on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula, 25 kilometers from the border with Slovenia. As an old ancient city, which was once located on the edge of the Celtic migrations, Novigrad during its history was at the intersection of turbulent historical events, as evidenced by the various and numerous written and material sources, archaeological sites and monuments, which can still be found in the city and its rich collection of stone monuments. The parish church of St. Pelagius is also dedicated to St. Maxim and St. Mary. The three-aisled basilica was until 1828 Cathedral of the Diocese of Novigrad. The start of construction of the church today can no longer be specify, according to sources was the middle of the 5th to the middle of the 8th century. There are different data using the following additions and modifications. Probably the church was extended at the end of the 13th century in the Gothic style, redesigned several times between the 15th to 18th centuries and some baroque.
