Slavonski Brod is situated on the north bank of the River Sava, on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. The name of the first settlement on the site of Slavonski Brod was Marsonia (in Roman times). The fairway on the Sava River has been used since Roman times. Fortress Brod is Baroque border stronghold on the Sava river, and also the heritage monument and landmark of Slavonski Brod which makes its nucleus. This baroque set of fortifications is the largest building of its kind in the Croatia, and among the largest in Europe. Franciscan monastery, and today well preserved, is one of the most imposing Baroque buildings in region of Slavonia with the most representative cloister of the monastery architecture of the northern Croatian.
