Medieval Serbian monastery on UNESCO heritage list

Manastir Sopocani, 36308 Sopocani

Sopocani is an Orthodox monastery dedicated to the Holy Trinity. The monastery is endowment of a Serbian King Stefan Uros I and it was built in 1260 in the region of Ras.
Because of its architectural values and amazing fresco paintings, the monastery complex (together with the remains of an old town Stari Ras and monastery Djurdjevi stupovi) is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1979.
The church is constructed as one nave building with a dome and a bell tower. Over the years, it was rebuilt due to destructing in many attacks by the Turkish army.
The fresco painting was completed probably in 1268 and it was made by different artists, so there are differences in the quality of the frescoes.
The whole interior is covered with frescoes which express the themes from the Bible and the life of Christ. On the walls are depicted saints, prophets, apostles and inevitable fresco painting of the monastery – King Stefan Uros I, holding a model of a church in his hands.
