An extraordinary museum in the very heart of Reykjavik
Reykjavik is a city that contains not only buzzing and exciting night life, but it is also a place to expand one’s knowledge on various fields and aspects of the country and society.
For some reasons Icelanders have figured out that it is good to have regular museums exhibiting history and arts. They considered it important as well to have a museum dedicated to a special part of the animal and human body, so they dedicated an extensive exhibition to the part that is perhaps the most crucial in continuation of every mammal’s life. Yes, you’re right – I am talking about penises and you heard me right – there is Phallological Museum in Reykjavik showing what is probably the most extensive collection of penises of mammals found in a single country.
The founder and developer of such original idea is Sigurður Hjartarson – now a historian to whom people used to bring phallus of various mammals for the tease (in relation with a childhood story of Hjartarson). In the 80’s, he had over ten specimens, but twenty years later, the collection has expanded to more than sixty. And so, a special museum was opened to introduce society and visitors with this particular collection.
The word about The Phallological Musem was spread and it gained a vast interest both from local and foreign visitors. Originally, the museum was located in Húsavík – a small fishing village – but in 2011, it was re-located to Reykjavik where it now greets its visitors in contemporary and well-curated groundings.
The entrance fee to the museum is 1250 Iskr. For pensioners and disabled – 1000 Iskr. Children under 13 years in company of parents can enter the museum for free.
