An impressive Bhuddist monastery and fortress

Chhagchhen Lam, Thimphu, Bhutan

Located in Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu, Trashichhoedzong is a Bhuddist monastery and fortress and is the seat of Bhutan’s government since 1952.

The orginal dzong was built in the 11th century by Lama Gyalwa Lhanangpa but it was taken over by Lama Phajo Drukhom Shigpo.
It wasn’t until 1641 that Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal acquired it, but after finding it too small, another was built instead.

The dzong was damaged during an 1897 earthquake and rebuilt in 1902.
