ZOO Ljubljana is located in the southwestern part of national park Rožnik, after being moved here in 1951 from its past location in the centre of Ljubljana. It was built on a 19.6 ha (48 acres) and is the only »big« ZOO in Slovenia.
It is quite a large ZOO with more than 500 animals of more than 130 species. The most interesting among them are: elephant, red panda, tigers and monkeys. And of course all the cute cubs that arrive in the ZOO every year!
ZOO Ljubljana is part of an EAZA program and it is involved in the endangered animal helping program. With that in mind, there are always a lot of educational activities offered in the ZOO.
One of the most popular is the farm house with a kids zoo in which they can meet the farm animals and spend time with them. Also, there are organised public feedings of different animals every day at various hours and even an elephant training.
A lot of interesting things are happening in the ZOO Ljubljana all year round. Kids can celebrate their birthdays with special animal guests. They can meet their favourite animal, help animal »keepers« with feeding the animals or even come to spend the vacation camping in the ZOO.
There are even special programs for older kids, like being an animal keeper for a day, organised Fotosafari which includes fotoshooting inside cages and an organised tour around the ZOO at night.
It will take you about 3 hours to get around the ZOO Ljubljana. Spend more time if you are planning to watch feedings. There are a lot of opportunities in the ZOO to make this a whole day trip. It offers many different play grounds for kids and a nice restaurant with snacks and lunches for the whole family.
