Active One-Day Getaway in the Beautiful Geopark Idrija

Idrija is located in the northwest part of Slovenia and is part of the huge and very diverse Geopark Idrija, a member of the European and World Geopark Network and UNESCO since 2004.

Geoparks Idrija prides itself with exceptional natural attractions, beautiful landscapes, preserved cultural heritage, educational activities and friendly locals. It offers numerous activities for families, couples, groups and for all looking for endless opportunities for hiking, biking or enjoying nature.

The area of Geopark Idrija includes the entire municipality of Idrija and Cerkno hills. It contains about 300 km2 of nature, culture and traditions with various activities, museums, information centres, tourist farms, handcraft shops and small charming traditional villages.

Some unique attractions include: the Dinosaurs’ footsteps near Gačnik, Wild Lake, Rake kanal, klavže, Pavla Partisan Hospital, Slovenia Partisan Printing Shop, some waterfalls, caves and many more. So far 22 thematic trails have been arranged and you can learn more about them in the Tourist Information Centre (TIC) in Idrija.

One part of Geopark Idrija is the Zgornja Idrijca Landscape Park. It starts right in the town of Idrija. It offers great opportunities for shorter walks,  particularly helpful for people who do not plan to spend a lot of time in the Geopark Idrija.

You can “enter” in the Zgornja Idrijca Landscape Park right from the Kamšt Water Wheel if you follow the Rake water canal. About a one hour long walk on the neatly pathway will lead you to the Wild Lake, the largest hydrological curiosity in the area.
