Kamnik is one of the cutest, nicest and beautiful small towns in Slovenia. With old architecture from the medieval days, red-orange roofs, small churches and ruins of mighty castles, it’s worth to visit. Its Medieval charm and its stunning nature, combined with white mountain tops in the background, delicious local cuisine and friendly locals make this a must visit location.
Due to its size and limited sightseeing opportunities, Kamnik makes a great half day or whole day trip, by visiting Arboretum Volčji Potok. Even extend it into a two day trip, by visiting Velika Planina or relaxing in one of the best spas in Slovenia, in Terme Snovik.
When you visit Kamnik, take time for a short walk through the well preserved streets with medieval architecture and antique charm. Climb up the short hills in the city and enjoy the amazing views.
Start your day in Kamnik by visiting Mali Grad Castle, a small chapel located on a hill at the edge of the city. Walk to the top of the hill and enjoy the beautiful views of Kamnik and its surroundings.
Not far from the Mali Grad Castle is another short hill with the church of Mary and Joseph’s engagement. The church itself is worth visiting because of its beautiful interior.
On the other side of the town Kamnik, about a 10 minute walk from the church, lies the amazing Church of St. Jacob with its famous library and the chapel designed by one of the most important Slovenian architects Jože Plečnik. This is one of the most important religious buildings in Slovenia. Its library was once the pride and joy of Slovenian priests.
Apart from those sights, Kamnik has some other sights and it does offer more interesting activities. You will find a number of small museums and monuments, restaurants with local cuisine and nice parks with opportunities for a short relaxing rest. Do not be afraid to wander around the town without a map.
If you are a nature lover, Kamnik and its surrounding offers even more. One afternoon is just enough time to visit the most famous botanical garden in Slovenia, the Arboretum Volčji Potok.
Kamnik and its surroundings offer great ideas for weekend getaways. One of the best options for a longer stay is the amazing nature of Velika Planina, where you can spend a few nights in the company of cows, local cheese products, solitary farms or at the endless ski slopes.

One dayEasyYou can reach Kamnik in a half hour drive from Ljubljana. It is also accessible with a bus from Ljubljana.Best way to get from one attraction to another is to walk or ride a bicycle. You should end your active day with a nice dinner. Many restaurants in Kamnik offer traditional local dishes, but I would recommend you to visit the Tourist Information Center (TIC) and book an organized food adventure.
Kamnik offers a lot of different places to spend a night, but there are two options that will really make your stay here something special. First is the Tourist Village on Velika Planina (you can read more about it in the post about Velika Planina). And the second is one of the best thermal spas in Slovenia, Terme Snovik.
End your day in spa centre Terme Snovik, where you will refill your body with needed energy for the next day.
