One Day in Piran

Piran is one of the cutest towns in Slovenia. It is located in Slovene Istria on the coastline of the Adriatic Sea. It is also the main city of municipality Piran, and a popular tourist point among visitors from around the world.

The name Piran is probably connected to the old Greek name for colour red, because the city is famous for the red roofs, which give it an unique charm. The city’s name has changed over time, as did the political arrangements and authorities.

Piran was first settled somewhere in the 8th century, but the blossom of the town began during the medieval era. Due to its seaside location, Piran was always closely connected to the sea. This can be seen in many characteristics of Piran – architecture of the city, traditions and everyday life of locals, food production and even the atmosphere in the city.

One of the most recognisable evidence of that connection is the Piran City Wall. It was built as protection against ships and enemies coming from the sea. Some parts of the wall are now transformed into viewing points for tourists which you should not miss when visiting Piran.

Piran City Wall is a great start for a one day trip in Piran. It will show you the city from a different perspective and get you the first glimpse of everything it has to offer.

Continue discovering the city by taking a stroll down the narrow streets, full of quaint little stores, antique architecture and unique local atmosphere. Do not be afraid to wander around the streets, as you will always find a way back to Piran’s main hotspot, the Tartini Square.

Tartini Square is the best place for a cup of coffee, ice cream or trying some local treats. Relax and observe the locals walking by. However, many other activities await you so it’s best go get going. The next attraction is located right beside you – the Benečanka House. You should not miss a visit to this great red house.

As the day is getting closer to the hottest hours of the day, you should head into the shade of the Aquarium Piran. An hour or two will be great, especially if you have some younger family members with you.

Then it’s the time to head to the promenade. Enjoy in the summer breeze and the sound of seagulls and take a stroll to the  St. George Cathedral. Spend some time here and explore the gracious interior of this peaceful church. Enjoy the amazing views of sea and wait for a romantic sunset.

Walk back to the city centre and search for one of the local restaurants or head to Tartini square to see what is going on there.
