Columbus is the capital of Ohio and it holds the highest population of residents in the entire state. Furthermore, it is the 14th most populated city in the whole United States. In fact, it is the 3rd most populated capital city in the country—and for good reason. Columbus has a lot to offer to both residents and travelers alike. The diverse array of people living here and the span of cultural differences makes for quite the interesting visit! Below is an outline of some of the best souvenirs to check out during your stay in this glorious city.
1. German Village Souvenirs
The German Village located in Columbus, Ohio has long been known as the brewery district and is divine. With an impressive count of shops, restaurants, and breweries (of course); it truly is a stop you should make if you travel to Columbus. Not only do they have a lot to offer to the visitors, they are of great historic significance to the area.
Housed south of downtown, it is quite easy to locate. One of the more memorable souvenirs you will find here is stained glass. Not only do they have stained glass creations for sale – they also have a fusible glass for anyone who creates glass art themselves!
2. Books of all kinds
I hate to sound like a broken record, but in the German Village, you will find one of the greatest selection of books you will likely find anywhere. Many of the stores in this area carry their own selection of books, while others are dedicated to them. For instance: there is even a bookstore within the German Village that is a 32-room book loft!
Due to the fact that the village itself is historical, there are many history books in the stores as well that are worth checking out. Some of these books even date back to the pre-civil war era making for not just an ideal souvenir, but a gift for someone who admires this sort of thing. Of course, you will additionally be able to find your run of the mill books written by both well-known authors with a foundation and those with a more recent following.
3. Sports Memorabilia
If you happen to be a fan of Ohio sports teams then you are in luck! Ohio is one of those states that take an exceptional amount of pride in their teams. Therefore, there are a whole lot of sports memorabilia shops around that will more than serve your every need. In fact, they even have a legitimate Fox Sports store full of some of the most excellent quality sports goods available anywhere.
Whether you prefer to show your pride with a Columbus Blue Jacket, t-shirt, or hoodie; socks and even bike seats are available. Even if you are not necessarily a sports fan, or perhaps you are a diehard fan of another team; the Fox Store especially is worth checking out as it has the largest collection of a teams’ hockey goods anywhere!
As I mentioned previously in one of my other points, the city of Columbus is made up of a diverse array of occupants from different backgrounds. This, of course, means that there is a lot of different cultures. And within these different cultures lies a vast array of crafts and art forms. However, this is of course not exclusive to the city of Columbus. There are, however, quite a few unique pieces of apparel and accessories here.
One of the funnier things I encountered in Columbus is what is called a Bear Punch T-shirt. It is a royal blue men’s or women’s t-shirt that features the image of a large brown bear being punched in the face by a bearded lumberjack looking fellow. It is quite the hysterical picture and it will more than make for a memorable piece of clothing and souvenir. If you are on the market for something a little more feminine, there are a variety of pretty hysterical tote bags also for sale. Whether you are carrying crafts or beach belongings back and forth – these totes are the perfect size with adorable phrases!
5. Lapel Pin and Charm Keepsakes
While there are a plenty of stores, restaurants, and other attractions in Columbus that can easily fill up your time, some attractions are too easily overlooked. For example, many people do not think about the State and City official buildings. While this is not something everyone is going to want to see, there are still a lot of travelers out there who appreciate government and political history.
If you fall into this category, there are a plethora of souvenirs to bring home from places like the State House Shop. With multiple governmental history buildings and their corresponding gift shops available to the public – you’ll be hard pressed to not find something memorable to bring home. One awesome example of this is the Ohio State House lapel pins or your basic Ohio shaped pin; they are perfect for any jacket!
6. Japanese Kitchenware
As a result of the diverse collection of people that make up this great country, there is a monstrous array of cultural items for sale. This, of course, is not true in every city, but when it comes to Columbus, you basically have your pick! While many cultures have become very mainstream and popular with Americans, I do not think any stand out as much as our attraction to Japan. The food, the lifestyle, the television; you name it.
For those Japanophiles out there, there are plenty of great kitchen pieces available in Columbus to represent their interests. Celebrate your love for Japan with a cast-iron teapot or lovely Sake set to share with friends. No matter what you are looking for, I guarantee you will easily find it.
Columbus, Ohio is a large city and it is easy to become overwhelmed while visiting. This guide, however, should point you in the right direction as far as souvenirs go. Not only are these shops full of interesting souvenirs, the stores should additionally lead you in a fun direction during your travel.
